Secure the BIOS to protect your system

Summary

After protecting your system, the next step is to disable the possibility to format the harddrive and reinstall Windows on top.
Other security software provide complex hacks and technology to help you so.
On our side, we believe that you can easily and securely protect your system by using the existing BIOS features.

  • Update Boot-Order.
  • You must put the C:\ drive first in the boot order. This prevents the user to start your laptop on a USB key or a DVD and reinstall a system. When doing so, the user has no choice but to start your Windows system, which you protected.

  • Protect BIOS configuration.
  • Once you've changed the boot order, you want to prevent anyone else to modify it. To do so, all BIOS give the possibility to protect the configuration by a password. Please define a strong password and only you will have the possibility to change the boot order when you need.

Now the only possibility that remains for a thief is to open your laptop, extract the harddrive and reformat it. Note, however that this requires lots of expertise and working hours, so nobody with this knowledge would do it.

Steps

First, enter the BIOS setup. Typically, the computer display a message such as "Press F2 to enter BIOS" when it is turned on.

Second, define the boot order. Usally the configuration looks as follows.

Third, set a password for the BIOS protection. Do not forget this password ! It is safe to write it down somewhere in case you need it.
